The Power Of Learning And Doing.
Bill Gates, the founder of Microsoft isn't the most brilliant among his mates, but he knows how to learn and do. Jeff Bezos, the founder of amazon.com isn't the best computer science student in his school days, but he knows how to learn and do. Mark Zuckerberg, the co-founder and the CEO of Facebook isn't the best of his class, but he knows how to learn and do.
One thing I have discovered is that one of the most difficult steps to take is the first step. The ability to step out when there's no concrete evidence of success is a difficult task. But it's in such difficult tasks filled with uncertainties that the secrets to success were hidden.
The more steps you take towards practicing what you've learned, the more experienced you become. Confucius said that "Knowledge without practice is useless, and practice without knowledge is dangerous". Be a book smart and also street smart. Learn by study and also learn by doing. One can not cancel the other. They complement each other.
Start taking action.
Action conquers fear. A journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step, not with continuous thinking about taking a step. Your ability to take that single step makes a whole lot of difference. You can't build your dream with what you're going to do or intending to do. You only build your dream by building it.
All the conglomerates you're seeing today are once a mere dream till someone took that bold step to plant the seed. And today that little seed has grown into a conglomerate you're seeing. There's power in action. Faith without action is dead.
As you continue learning, make sure you also continue applying what you have learned. It is not just about deciding what you'll do with the knowledge, it's about actually doing it. The one who decides and later not does is the same as the one who never decided at all. We learn through study and also through doing.
That's why in school, we have theoretical and practical sections. The theory is of no use to you if you don't know how to apply it. The person who has little theoretical knowledge and knows how to apply it is much better than that person that knows a lot theoretically but can't practically apply it.
Strive for opportunities to practically put a skill into practice wherever it presents itself. You may not imagine how much you will learn from these insignificant moves you're making in real-time.
Read about a subject, apply it, see it in action, take that practical experience back to your reading for a deeper understanding of the theory and then take that deeper understanding of the theory back to your activity.... and it goes on like that. It's a never-ending cycle for whoever wants to be proactive in her endeavors.
Those practical experiences I got during my engineering internship helps me to understand better what we have been taught in the classroom and makes the remaining one session of the course to be more fulfilling.
Also in sales, those holiday periods that I use to engage in business activities at computer village Lagos gives me a lot of insights that helped me in picturing some scenarios when reading sales and business-related books.
The truth remains that all the study in this life won't help you if you are not always ready to do it. Being book smart isn't enough, you'll have to add street smart to it. Your ability to execute what you've learned is the main thing.
If you can't act on what you know, then you're not different from that person who does not know it at all. Emerson who was a well-educated man in the traditional book smart sense advised, Do the thing and you shall have the power to even do more.
